Quirky Ways to Celebrate February

Quirky Ways to Celebrate February

I for one vote to change the spelling to something more natural. FebUary.

If you’d like to get off the beaten path of groundhog puppets and paper valentines, here are a few unusual ways to celebrate in February.

Clean House

Don’t wait for spring, deep clean in February. February was named after the Latin februum, which means purification, from the purification ritual Februa held on February 15 in the old lunar Roman calendar. You can tell the kids to clean their rooms on February 15th.

Bird Watch

In the past, Valentine’s Day traditions said that if a woman saw certain birds fly overhead, she would marry different types of men. A robin meant she would marry a sailor, a goldfinch meant a rich man, and if she saw a sparrow she would marry a poor  man and be very happy. February is also National Wild Bird Feeding Month.

Learn Chemistry

February 7th is National Periodic Table Day.  Here is a fun battleship game to learn the periodic table.

Or you can try Ion: A Compound Building Game. We just received this in the mail and I can’t wait to try it.

Tell a Story

February 26th is National Tell a Fairy Tale Day.   This would be a great game to play.

Throw a Party

This year you can have a big party on Leap Day (February 29) to celebrate all the people who only have a birthday once every four years.  We had a neighbor when I was young that was  born on Feb. 29 — when she turned 64 she held a huge Sweet 16 party. So cute!

You could also celebrate my birthday. (Not on Feb 29. I feel all of my 40mumblemumble years.) Who knows, someday when I’m rich and famous you can say, “you knew me when.”

How do you celebrate February?

  1. We’re excited to celebrate Chinese New Year (Feb 8) with the Chinese New Year Online Unit Study . We’re going to work through study (should take us 3 days), then have a par-tay Chinese New Year style with some friends.

  2. No snow here but we have love feeding and watching the birds, too! We had about 100 goldfinches this morning. Hard to do math with all those birds outside the window. Have you guys done the Great Backyard Bird Count?

    1. 100 goldfinches! I would have loved to have seen that! We’ll get maybe 4-5 at a time if we are really lucky. We’ve tried the Great Backyard Bird Count, but it seems like the only time we get a good showing of birds in February is when it snows. Since it’s in a few days, maybe we’ll get lucky!
